Martyn Child was born in Gosport. He studied Fine Art: Painting at Northbrook College Sussex, graduating in 2005. Martyn’s work explores the individuals experience of the nocturnal urban environment with a particular focus on the colours of the city after dark. His work is often large scale Oil on Canvas paintings sometimes incorporating spray paint and fluorescent inks to reflect the artificial light seen in cities after dark. Martyn’s painting practice aims to capture the atmosphere and energy of the city through an expressionist painterly approach, contrasting the vibrancy of the man-made environment with the dark of the night. His use of colour is inspired by the artist David Batchelor and his book “Chromophobia”. Edward Hopper Willem de Kooning and Frank Auerbach are other important influences.
